Emissions to carbon credits for net zero future

🌍 Climate Crisis is real and just accelerating across the world. Greenhouse gas emissions, especially CO2 levels have reached alarming levels, causing global erratic weather events – frequent floods, rising sea levels, forest fires, and irreversible damage to ecosystems.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has set aggressive emission reduction targets to remove or avoid billions of tons of CO2 annually, to keep warming below 1.5 deg C. Governments have built legislations like US IRA 45Q Tax credits, Canada’s Clean fuel regulations & investment tax credits for CCUS projects. European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and EU ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme).

There are many ways to reduce carbon emissions, but industrial emitters prefer carbon removal technologies with minimal CapEx and OpEx without major changes to their current billion dollar infrastructure. Industrial companies wanna keep running their factories & plants, as usual with minimal disruption. That’s where Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage Technologies play a critical role in removing emissions while keeping them running with no big billion dollar changes.

🌱🌱 Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies include Point Source carbon capture, Direct Air Capture, Utilisation & Storage.

Point Source Carbon Capture fromindustrial emission source, where CO2 is captured before entering the atmosphere. The most used technology here is liquid amine based scrubbing in long tower scrubbers, with very large physical footprint, high regeneration energy, and consequently, high CapEx and OpEx.
In amine scrubbing, CO2 reacts with amine sorbents to form carbamates, and reversibly regenerate CO2 on heating to 120 deg C.

Direct Air Capture pulls CO2 directly from Air, where CO2 concentration is approx 420 ppm, but offer flexibility & scalability. Alkaline materials like Potassium Hydroxide or Calcium Hydroxide, etc react with CO2 to form carbonates. They are very energy intensive & Capital intensive. Companies like Carbon Engineering and Climeworks utilize such techniques, but costs still hover around $500-600/ton, although trends are moving downward.

Carbon Utilisation includes Concrete Mineralization where CO2 reacts with calcium ions in fresh concrete mix to form mineralised carbonates which permanently locks the captured CO2 and also improve the strength of concrete.
 Conversion of CO2 to fuels & chemicals using thermochemical & electrochemical routes, are also underway, by many companies including Twelve Carbon, Dioxycle, etc.

Carbon Geological Storage includes injecting CO2 into deep saline aquifers or basalt formations, where CO2 reacts with metal ions to form carbonates & get permanently stored, without any leakage risks.
