Indian Oil &amp; IIT Delhi select n0c tech for Carbon Capture &amp; Storage Technology


<p>India, the world&#8217;s third-largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter, is facing a critical environmental challenge. Scope 1 emissions, which directly contribute to GHG emissions, demand urgent attention. We are at cross roads, one where we need to develop our infrastructure at a rapid pace to match with our populational needs and other where we also need to do this in a way that does not damage the environment.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s explore the key data and strategies that can drive India towards a sustainable future.In 2020-21, Indian companies reported scope 1 emissions of 113.6 MtCO2e, equivalent to the annual emissions of 24.6 million cars. In this, the energy sector accounts for 75% of these emissions, while industrial processes and product use (IPPU) contribute 15% and agriculture adds 10% to this.</p>



<p>To tackle this issue, India has set ambitious climate goals. By 2030, the we aim to reduce GHG emission intensity by 33 to 35% compared to 2005 levels. Additionally, India aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, requiring significant effort in reducing scope 1 emissions across all sectors.Balancing climate action with energy security and poverty alleviation remains a challenge for us.</p>

Unveiling India&#8217;s Emission Challenge: Scope 1 and the Path to a Greener Future

<p>As the world&#8217;s climate crisis intensifies, the importance of reducing carbon emissions has never been more pressing. Carbon neutral and net zero are terms that are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct differences that are essential to understand in the context of achieving the net zero by 2050 target.</p>



<p>Carbon neutral refers to balancing carbon emissions by offsetting them with activities that remove carbon from the atmosphere. For example, planting trees, using renewable energy, or investing in carbon capture technology. While carbon neutrality is a significant step in reducing carbon emissions, it only maintains the status quo and does not necessarily lead to a cleaner future.</p>



<p>On the other hand, net zero refers to achieving a balance between the amount of carbon emitted and the amount removed from the atmosphere. This means reducing carbon emissions to the lowest possible level and then offsetting the remaining emissions with activities that remove carbon from the atmosphere. Net zero is a much more ambitious target than carbon neutrality and is necessary to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C.</p>
